Leading with Pride: Empowering LGBTQ+ DECA Members

Jun 12, 2025

Each June, Pride Month reminds us of the power that comes from living authentically. In the world of emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, authenticity is a strength, not a setback. For LGBTQ+ students in DECA, Pride isn’t just about celebration. It’s about representation, inclusion and a future where everyone has a seat at the table.

Pride Month is a chance to reflect on our progress and the work we still need to do. It’s about recognizing that LGBTQ+ inclusion in business isn't a side note; it's a driver of innovation and equity. Whether someone is just joining DECA or stepping into a leadership role, they deserve to see that there’s a path forward for them, just as they are.

Personal Reflection

When I joined DECA, I didn’t know what it would mean to navigate professional spaces as a nonbinary student. Leadership often comes with expectations such as how to dress speak and “present” yourself to be taken seriously, but over time, I’ve learned that the best leaders aren’t those who fit a mold; they’re the ones who challenge it with confidence and compassion.

As a nonbinary member, I haven’t always felt comfortable making my identity visible in professional spaces. Sometimes, I’ve kept it private—not out of shame, but out of uncertainty about how it would be received. Even now, I’m still navigating what it means to lead authentically.

I wouldn’t claim to have done major work in the name of inclusion, but I’ve learned that sometimes, simply existing in leadership as someone who doesn’t fit the mold is its own quiet form of advocacy. You don’t have to wave a banner to make a difference. Sometimes, simply being there is enough to show someone else they can be too.

A Message to LGBTQ+ Members and Allies

To all LGBTQ+ DECA members, your identity is not a barrier to leadership; it’s a unique asset. You bring fresh perspectives, resilience and a sense of purpose that make our organization stronger. Don’t underestimate the power of your presence.

To chapters and advisors: inclusion starts with small choices like respecting names and pronouns, showcasing diverse role models and ensuring all members feel welcome. Those decisions set the tone for the business world we’re preparing to lead.

At its core, DECA is about preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. And the future of leadership is diverse, authentic and inclusive. This Pride Month, I’m proud to be part of that future.
