Everyone Starts Somewhere: Supporting First-Year Collegiate DECA Members

Mar 9, 2026

An important aspect to consider in DECA is the relationship between the high school and collegiate divisions in your state. As Collegiate DECA members, it’s our duty to inspire and prepare the next generation of students to become better leaders than we ever could.

That is why the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Collegiate DECA sponsors a competitive event at the Nevada DECA State Career Development Conference every year. This year, UNLV Collegiate DECA sponsored the Principles of Hospitality & Tourism event for the high school division’s state conference in Nevada.

Here are some reasons we chose this event in particular:

Supporting 1st-time Competitors

The Principles Series events are designed for 1st-time DECA members. It’s completely understandable to be nervous during your first time, and there is a chance you may not place high enough to compete at the international level.

By sponsoring this event, we hope to encourage new DECA members to compete in it, not only to choose an easier event to start with, but also to be rewarded if they do well.

Legacy of Hospitality in Las Vegas

For those who may not be aware, Las Vegas is a city known for being a tourist destination, with many different hotels. As we continue to grow the hospitality industry, we want to support those entering the field for the first time. This way, they can take their experience and learn from the city we live in.

As a former high school DECA member, I understand what it’s like to face the challenge of attending your first association conference. Whether it’s spending our time or sponsoring the initiative, we as Collegiate DECA members need to show our support to continue the trend of exceptional leaders by the time they graduate and take our place.
