Case Study of the Week: Intergenerational Mentorships

Jan 19, 2026

Human Resources

You are to assume the role of the director of human resources for Square PR, a public relations firm in a large city. The president of the company is concerned about the number of long-term employees retiring in the next several years and wants you to create an employee-development program that will allow employees near retirement to mentor younger employees.

By 2031, all baby boomers will be eligible for retirement. While not all will retire at the same time, the next decade will see a significant increase of older employees exiting the workforce. At Square PR, baby boomers account for 25% of the 100 person staff.

The president is concerned about impending retirements. The employees reaching retirement age have prominent roles in the company and have institutional knowledge beyond standard operating procedures. The older employees will be taking in-depth knowledge of their role and company culture with them as they retire.

To help bridge the gap in knowledge, the president wants you to implement an employee-development program that will focus on mentorships between older employees and younger employees to ensure that transfer of knowledge and skill is achieved.

You must determine:

  • Timeline of mentorship
  • How the mentorship program will operate
  • Employee learning objectives and methods
  • Benefits to the more experienced employee
