Mindset Matters: How Positivity Fuels DECA Success

Mar 1, 2026

“No one ever got anywhere, accomplished anything or survived any amount of ill luck, by being negative.”

Quoted by Pat Summitt, one of history's best Women’s basketball coaches with five NCAA national championship titles to her name. It shows that being positive, even when life throws everything at you, helps you navigate the challenges.

This article breaks down the power of positivity and how it can be leveraged throughout life, especially in DECA.

Positivity Leads to Advancements in Performance

Positivity is a competitive advantage, especially in DECA competitions. Positivity is the belief that growth is possible and that anything, within limits, can be achieved.

For example, when you approach a case study competition and think, “I can figure this out” or “I’m ready to take this on,” you engage more deeply with the case. You prepare more intentionally, and in the end, you grow rather than avoiding it.

Two competitors may come into the same event with the same preparation and knowledge, but if one student prepares with optimism and positivity, their confidence will be boosted. While the other may be less confident and lost in counting the competition. Positivity fuels effort, and effort boosts confidence.

Positivity Under Pressure is a Hack

Pressure is inevitable, whether in a competition or while giving a speech; the key is to keep your composure and trust your preparation.

As DECA students, we’ve prepared and delivered our speeches at least 20 times or practiced through multiple case studies. Those hours you put in strengthened your brain for the topic of preparation, and whether you know it or not, it’ll be your most significant help.

Mistakes happen. Maybe you forget your script, miss a KPI or run out of time in your presentation. A negative mindset in those times magnifies the issue by amplifying the mistake. Instead, in those cases, a positive mind continues forward. Judges notice confidence and can’t read through your mind to see what you forgot to mention. You’ll recover quickly and finish strong with positivity.

Positivity After Hearing Results

Not every competitor advances to the next round. Not every name is called. Not every candidate wins the election. For Collegiate DECA members, balancing setbacks can feel challenging, especially after the hundreds of hours you’ve spent preparing. But positivity helps reframe the outcome. Instead of saying “I didn’t win” or “I wasn’t good enough,” you can say “I improved and learned through the process” or “I’ll come back stronger next year.”

Every great leader has failed more times than they’ve succeeded. However, it’s because they didn’t take no as an answer and accepted the path of growth that they’re where they are today. Think about Michael Jordan in Basketball, or Steve Jobs with Apple, or even J.K. Rowling with Harry Potter. Everyone failed once, but their success now far outweighs the loss.

Thomas Edison is credited with saying, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” What came after those 10,000 tries? It’s the light bulb that likely lights up the room you’re sitting in right now. Don’t let results define you; instead, let the success you achieve after crossing them define you.

Positivity in Leadership and Career

We, as Collegiate DECA members, are the future leaders of tomorrow. As leaders, positivity shapes how we lead meetings, collaborate on projects and even build personal brands for ourselves and our organizations. Positivity makes us visionary leaders, builds confidence in others and breeds momentum within the team. Whether it’s an internship, interview or future career role, employers look for ambition and confidence as they choose their candidate. Thus, whether you’re pursuing a job or a leadership role, the way you present yourself matters.

Positivity is more than just a mindset; it’s a strategy! It enhances performance, steadies you under pressure, reframes setbacks and strengthens leadership. In DECA and beyond, challenges are guaranteed, but so is growth for those who choose to see opportunity within them.

Remember: the next time you’re overwhelmed or face a negative outcome, choose positivity as your friend!
