Summer is one of the best opportunities to get ahead, but it's also when plans can easily get lost. Setting goals is the easy part. Following through? That's what helps chapters start the year strong.
If you want to make real progress this summer, you'll need a system that keeps you on track. Here's how you can lead your chapter with purpose during the off-season.
Start Small, Move Steady
Big goals might seem like the best way to do things, but they can also be overwhelming later. The key to building momentum is starting with small, achievable steps.
For example, if your chapter wants to create a recruitment video, don't plan everything simultaneously. Start by brainstorming a few ideas, then focus on writing a draft script, reaching out to speakers and finally planning a day to film. Each step in your goal should build on the last. Small wins will stack up and keep your chapter moving forward without getting stuck.
Write It Down and Share It
Goals are achieved when they're written down and shared with others, when the entire team knows what's expected and who's working on what, your chapter will stay organized and focused.
Even something simple like a shared checklist can make a huge difference. It keeps your plans visible and helps your team hold each other accountable.
Check In and Adjust
Summer can feel long, but time passes quickly when you're not paying attention. That's why it's important to check in regularly. You can have quick, 15-minute video calls every few days to keep everyone on track.
These check-ins will allow your team to see what's working, make adjustments and support each other. A simple conversation can help your chapter stay focused and prevent goals from slipping away as summer gets busy.
Stay Focused on the Purpose
When things get hectic, it's easy to lose sight of why you set these goals in the first place. Whether your chapter is preparing for competition, working to grow membership or building new events, every small step you take now makes a difference when school starts.
The summer is about building good habits and setting up your DECA chapter for success. Keep your purpose at the front of your goals and stay connected to the big picture.
