How to Keep Your New Year's Resolutions

Jan 3, 2022

New Year’s resolutions are a fun way to set new goals. However, look back on years past. Did you keep your resolutions? Do you even remember what they were?

Here are some ways to keep your New Year’s resolutions all the way through 2022.

1. Create Systems, Not Just Goals

If you only focus on the end goal, you will feel discouraged if you don’t achieve it. However, if you can create a sustainable system, process or procedure, you are more likely to reach your goal.

Example: If you are trying to win DECA glass on the international stage, then create a process that will help you achieve that goal, such as taking a practice test every week or going through a role-play twice a week.

2. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

  • S = Specific
  • M = Measurable
  • A = Attainable
  • R = Relevant
  • T = Time Bound

Use this acronym to create goals that are actually attainable. Creating ambitious goals is not bad; however, developing unattainable goals is discouraging. Who wants to set themselves up for failure?

3. Hold Yourself Accountable

The best way to hold yourself accountable is to tell your friends, family and peers! Let them know what goals you have for yourself and how you plan on reaching them. Ask them to check up on you periodically throughout the year.

Your friends and family are there to support you, so use that to your advantage and let them help you along your journey.

The New Year is truly a time to reset and evaluate what you want to achieve. However, don’t let your resolutions fall flat once after the first few weeks. Use these tips to keep the momentum going throughout the entire year.
