DECA & The Muscular Dystrophy Association Celebrate 45 Years of Partnership

Aug 29, 2025

This year marks an incredible milestone as DECA and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) celebrate 45 years of partnership.

This collaboration has empowered generations of emerging leaders to make a real difference in their communities while supporting groundbreaking research, care, and advocacy for individuals and families living with neuromuscular diseases.

Since the partnership began in 1979, DECA members worldwide have committed themselves to fundraising, raising awareness, and lending their creativity and passion to support MDA’s mission. From chapter-level events, school-wide initiatives, and statewide fundraising campaigns, DECA members have raised over $8 million to fund vital research and provide resources for families affected by muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other neuromuscular diseases.

Beyond financial contributions, this partnership has created countless opportunities for DECA members to develop their leadership skills through service. Whether planning a community walk or 5k, spearheading a school-wide awareness campaign, or participating in MDA’s Disability is Diversity challenge, students have learned the power of teamwork, innovation, and empathy in action.

Many DECA members share that their work with MDA was one of the most meaningful experiences of their high school or collegiate careers, as it helped them understand the value of service leadership and leaving a legacy of compassion in their communities.

“DECA is proud to partner with MDA to advance its mission and engage students in meaningful service. Our collaboration demonstrates the powerful connection between education, leadership, and community impact. Together, we celebrate 45 years of inspiring students to make a difference that extends well beyond the classroom,” shared Sarah Cozewith, DECA’s Chief Partnership Officer.

Together, DECA and MDA have helped champion inclusion and accessibility while inspiring future leaders in business and healthcare alike. MDA’s breakthroughs in treatments and its commitment to families have been strengthened by DECA’s dedication to advocacy and fundraising. What started as a shared vision has grown into a 45-year movement of impact, awareness, and hope.

As DECA and MDA celebrate this remarkable milestone, the partnership’s future looks brighter than ever. With new generations of students continuing to rise to the challenge, the commitment to service, leadership, and meaningful impact will only deepen in the years ahead.

Here’s to 45 years of achievement, and to the countless lives touched by this extraordinary partnership.
