Meet Smithville's DECA Duck!

Smithville High School’s DECA chapter has found a creative way to stand out thanks to its newest mascot, DECA Duck. The bright blue duck has become a fixture at recruiting events, pep rallies, and special activities, bringing a little fun (and a lot of attention) to the school’s business and marketing student organization.
The idea hatched last year when DECA member VP of Finance Madison Edwards stumbled upon a small blue rubber ducky. What began as a simple trinket quickly grew into something much larger.
“I thought it was funny at first, but then I realized it could be a fun way to get people excited about DECA,” Edwards said. “Next thing we knew, we had a full-sized custom duck costume. It just took off from there.”
Since then, DECA Duck has been spotted at recruiting events, school assemblies, and will make a special appearance in this year’s homecoming parade. Last spring, he even stole the show at the Mr. SHS pageant when one finalist sang a song in his honor while the duck danced across the stage. The mascot has become more than just a costume. He’s part of Smithville DECA’s identity.
“DECA Duck gives us a fun, recognizable brand,” said Payton Cupp, the chapter’s Vice President of Marketing. “Students love taking pictures with him, and it’s a way to connect with people who might not know what DECA is yet.”
To build on that momentum, DECA Duck has his own T-shirt and even an Instagram profile (@deca.duckshs), where students can follow his adventures throughout the year. Advisor Dr. Don Simon said the mascot is already making a difference.
“It’s amazing how a simple idea can spark so much creativity,” Simon said. “DECA Duck has given our chapter a unique presence in the school, and it’s helping us recruit and engage students in ways we couldn’t before.”
With his growing popularity, DECA Duck is here to stay. He’s waddling his way into the hearts of Smithville High School students and keeping school spirit flying high.
