Failing is always an important step in your journey, whether you are running for state office or trying to win DECA glass. Failing is a great way to reflect and adapt to circumstances that might require you to change your way of thinking.
Everyone fails at least once in their life, so even if you fail, you should not bring it down on yourself. Instead, use failure as a way to fuel your drive next year if you attempt to retry your endeavor.
Let's look at an example of failing in both DECA terms and in real-life situations!
Toby Qin ICDC Finals Run
As a freshman, Toby had the honor of advancing from this state career conference to DECA’s International Career Development Conference, being the only person in his chapter to attend. Unfortunately, he did not place as a finalist, but he still enjoyed the competition, consuming 11 ice cream cones. Toby didn't take failure personally and still tried to find good energy in his trip.
During the 2025 ICDC, Toby placed as a finalist! All the work over the year had paid off, working hard and having that drive helps you get to where you want. No matter what is holding you back, your drive is key to success.
Lebron James’ 2011 Finals Run
In 2011, LeBron failed to win the 2011 NBA Finals, losing 4-2. But for LeBron, this wasn't the end of his career; he instead used this as fuel for his run the following year, in 2012, where he dominated the Oklahoma City Thunder, winning 4-1.
