At a DECA competition, your first impression matters just as much as your presentation. Before you even speak, your outfit sends a message about your confidence, professionalism, and readiness to compete. The DECA dress code isn’t just a set of rules; it’s a standard that unifies members as emerging leaders in the world of business.

Whether you're competing at districts, states or stepping onto the ICDC stage, here’s everything you need to know to dress to win.

The Basics

DECA’s dress expectations can vary slightly by state association, but all competitors should be familiar with the core guidelines. At ICDC, the iconic DECA blazer is required when appearing on stage or in front of a judge, so treat it as your championship uniform.

Tops

A collared shirt or blouse is acceptable, but collared shirts must be tucked in and paired with a tie or scarf. Avoid cropped or low-cut tops, as professionalism is key.

  • Bonus Tip: Stick to solid colors for a clean, polished look. Busy patterns can distract the judge from your performance. Although a blazer isn’t always required at districts or states, it’s a reliable staple that immediately elevates your outfit.

Bottoms

Dress slacks, knee-length skirts or professional dresses are all appropriate. A properly hemmed, well-fitted pair of dress pants can take your entire look from good to exceptional.

Shoes

Footwear must be closed-toed and polished. Save athletic shoes, sandals or anything overly casual for after awards. A sleek pair of flats, loafers or heels will always keep you in the safe zone. Also, make sure your choice of shoes is comfortable! You can end up walking upwards of 15,000 steps at some conferences.

Tips From DECA Leaders

“My advice for dressing well in DECA is to start with the basics. A pair of professional pants, a blouse or button-down, and don’t forget a blazer - especially for ICDC! Business clothes can get pricey, so I always check second-hand stores and outlets. They have a lot of great items. I also encourage members to find something original for you to wear. For me, that’s my hummingbird brooch. Choosing something meaningful and unique helps you stand out and gives you a boost of confidence!” - Wilsey Zahner
“One thing that’s made a big difference for me is the phrase ‘look good, feel good.’ I always make sure I’m comfortable and confident in what I’m wearing (because DECA presentations already make you nervous enough)! If you’re uncomfortable or fidgeting with your outfit, it’s one thing to think about. But when you feel put together and confident in your appearance, it really shows in how you present yourself.” - Eileen Zhuge

Your outfit should never distract from your performance; it should support it. Dressing professionally demonstrates to judges that you respect the competition and are prepared to deliver a winning presentation. So suit up, straighten that tie or scarf and walk into your event ready to perform at your absolute best.
