A conference might last only a weekend, but the relationships you build can last for years if you follow up. Too many DECA members let great connections fade simply because they don’t reach out after the event. The right messages can turn a quick conversation into a future friend or career connection.
Here are the five messages every DECA member should send after any DECA conference:
1. The Thank-You Message
This message goes to anyone who inspired, helped or supported you, whether that’s advisors, speakers, association officers or chapter members. A simple note shows professionalism and maturity.
- Example: “Thank you for sharing your story during the workshop. It really motivated me to push myself as a leader.”
2. The Follow-Up Message
This is a great message to use for new contacts when you want to stay connected with members, competitors or leaders. Mention something specific from your conversation.
- Example: “I really enjoyed our conversation about entrepreneurship yesterday. I’d love to stay connected and hear more about what you’re working on.”
3. The Collaboration Message
Send this to peers you might want to work with again. Conferences often spark ideas that can continue long after the event ends.
- Example: “It was great working together during the conference. Would you be interested in collaborating on an Instagram post reflecting on our experience?”
4. The Social Connection Message
This one is simple but powerful. Connect with people on LinkedIn or Instagram and include a short professional note.
- Example: “Great meeting you at the conference! I’d love to stay in touch.”
5. The Opportunity Message
This message can be one of the most valuable to send. Use it when you want advice, mentorship or insight from someone whose experience or leadership you admire.
- Example: “Your leadership experience is inspiring. Would you be open to sharing any tips for the future?”
Sending these five messages only takes a few minutes, but they can shape your connections, your future career, or your next big opportunity. DECA conferences aren’t just events; they’re the start of your professional network. Make the most of it.
