Are you leading or just reacting? That’s a question I’ve found myself asking more than once in my DECA career. Between endless deadlines, constant notifications and a calendar that never seems to let up, it’s easy to believe that leadership is just about staying busy. But after being active in numerous different communities, I’ve learned that some of the best leaders aren’t the ones moving the fastest; they’re the ones who are actually present in the moment.
As a high school student juggling everything from DECA, athletics, internships and schoolwork, I know what it feels like to be pulled in what feels like a million directions. It’s overwhelming. But if there’s one habit I’ve tried to hold onto through all of it, it’s grounding myself. Whether I’m running a chapter meeting or having a conversation with a member one-on-one, I do everything possible to be present. Fully. And honestly. That makes all the difference and sets you apart as a leader.
What It Really Means to Be a Present Leader
Being present doesn’t necessarily mean doing less; it means showing up with deep intention. It’s not just about being in the room, it's about being engaged in the moment.
Here are some ways that look like this:
- Paying full attention. Not glancing at your phone, not thinking about your next task! Focus on the person or situation in front of you.
- Listening to understand. Not just nodding along until it’s your turn to talk in the conversation, but actually hearing what other people are saying.
- Communicating clearly and with care. People can tell when your heart’s entirely in it.
- Responding instead of reacting. Taking a moment to think before speaking or making a decision can make a world of difference in how others perceive you.
These may seem like small acts—but together, they’re what make a leader trustworthy, approachable, and respected. A leader who thrives in the world we live in.
Why It Matters in a Fast-Paced World
Let’s be honest: today’s business world moves insanely fast! Everyone’s trying to stay one step ahead. That pressure to always be “on” and move quickly is real, and it can be so draining. But present leaders don’t just ride the wave; they guide through it. They’re the ones who stay calm amidst all the chaos. Who listens before jumping straight in? Who makes thoughtful and considerate decisions when everyone else around them is rushing? That’s the kind of leadership that lasts and people notice it.
What Presence Leads To
When you show up intentionally, you naturally build stronger connections with your team, make more thoughtful decisions, have more transparent and effective communication, experience less burnout — for you and the people around you — and develop a leadership style that feels genuine, not artificial.
How DECA Members Can Practice Presence
We All Have Opportunities to Lead! However, how we choose to show up in those moments makes a huge difference and dictates the kind of leader we are.
Here are a few small ways you can lead more intentionally in DECA this upcoming year:
- In chapter meetings: Don’t just run through the agenda but really listen. Let your members feel genuinely heard.
- At conferences: Be present in your conversations. It’s not about how many people you meet, it's about how authentic those interactions are.
- In team projects: Don’t rush through every assignment. Take time to collaborate and connect with your teammates.
- In your routine: Take a break from your phone. Hold some space to reflect. Some of your best ideas will come when your brain has a second to breathe.
Just remember, leadership isn’t about doing it all! It's about being there for the things that matter. Choose to lead with intention. Choose to lead with focus. Choose to lead with passion. Authentic leadership means being present, right here, right now.
