Getting “Engaged” at Collegiate DECA Engage 2025

By Myles Frueh, Collegiate DECA Engage Content Creator

This year, I had the incredible opportunity to be one of four Collegiate DECA Engage Content Creators! In this article, I’ll be recapping how members of Collegiate DECA were truly getting “engaged” throughout the conference.

Networking: Making Meaningful Connections

One of the biggest highlights of the Engage conference was the opportunity for DECA members to connect. During the event, attendees participated in an exciting activity called “Networking Bingo.”

The game featured a bingo sheet filled with prompts such as “submitted a DECA Direct article,” “participated in a case study workshop,” and “high school DECA alumni.” It was a fun and interactive way to meet new people, learn about their experiences and even compete for a Shop DECA gift card!

Of course, the Splitsville Networking Social was another crowd favorite. Members gathered at Splitsville Lanes in Tampa, Florida, for an evening of bowling, light bites and laughter. From darts to ping pong, there was no shortage of fun or friendship that night!

Keynote Speaker: Jessica Villegas

Engage 2025 featured an inspiring keynote address from Jessica Villegas, who brought over 20 years of leadership and personal development experience to the stage.

Jessica shared powerful insights on how to embody the person you want to become. She encouraged members to visualize the version of themselves they aspire to be—and to take intentional steps toward becoming that person.

She also discussed what employers are seeking in today’s workforce, focusing on three key areas: values, aptitude and skills. Her message was both motivating and practical, leaving members ready to go the extra in their personal and professional journeys.

EDUTours: Learning Beyond the Conference

Another exciting aspect of Engage 2025 was the opportunity for members to explore Tampa through various EDUTours. Each visit provided attendees with hands-on exposure to multiple industries and career paths.

I had the chance to tour PPK + the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, and it was absolutely inspiring! We observed the creative environment where the team at PPK develops campaigns for major clients, including Bridgestone Tires, Wonder and Ashley Homestore. We also learned about their collaboration with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation and its impactful mission.

As a marketing enthusiast, seeing the blend of creativity and strategy in action was an unforgettable experience.

Painting Your Chapter Canvas 101

Led by the Executive Officer Team, this interactive session encouraged members to reflect on their DECA journeys and chapter strategies.

Participants wrote why they joined DECA on sticky notes and placed them under categories like “professional development,” “community service,” and “chapter events.” The activity sparked meaningful movement and conversation, while additional prompts—such as “What’s the hardest event to plan?” or “What’s most important for members?”—helped reveal new perspectives.

The session wrapped up with chapters sharing what makes them unique, allowing everyone to gain ideas and inspiration from one another.

From Prep to Podium

Former DECA member Mackenzie Weber, a Johnson & Wales University alumna, shared valuable insights on how to succeed in roleplays and prepared events. Her experience as a past competitor made her advice both relatable and actionable, giving members fundamental tools to use as they prepare for future DECA competitions.

Competitive Event

To conclude the conference, participants engaged in a marketing case study competition. This simulated the real DECA competitive experience—complete with the challenge and excitement that define every DECA event. It was a perfect opportunity for members to apply what they learned throughout Engage 2025 and strengthen their presentation and problem-solving skills.

Overall, Engage 2025 was truly one to remember. I’m beyond grateful to DECA for giving me—and so many others—the chance to network, learn, grow, laugh and engage with members from across the nation and beyond.
