Freshman year is among the most exciting and important times in your high school journey. You’re starting fresh, meeting new people and opening doors that will shape the next four years of your life.
Here are four tips to set a strong foundation for your high school experience!
1. Say Yes to Every Opportunity
Freshman year is the perfect time to experiment. You should say yes to every opportunity because that’s how you’ll learn which opportunities to say no to in the future. Whether joining DECA, trying a new sport or attending a school event, saying yes opens doors to new experiences.
You may not stick with everything, but you’ll never know what you’re truly passionate about unless you try. While I didn’t find passion in sports I tried freshman year, saying yes to joining DECA led me to a community, leadership skills and experiences I’ll carry for life.
2. Keep Your Grades Strong from the Start
Your GPA begins freshman year and is much harder to raise than to maintain. Take classes that fit your strengths, build good study habits and stay organized. Think of freshman year as the foundation for your future success.
3. Explore Career Interests Now
High school is the easiest time to test out different paths without committing. Use this time to explore classes, clubs or activities connected to careers you may be curious about. Trying these interests early will not only help you discover what excites you, but also give you clarity on what you want to pursue in college and beyond.
4. Enjoy the Journey
Freshman year is just the beginning of who you’ll become. You’ll grow, change and discover so much by the time you’re a senior. This journey goes by fast. Don’t forget to enjoy the ride, be patient with yourself and cherish the memories you make along the way!
