Preparing for Success: Summer Competition Preparation

Jun 1, 2026

While summer is a time to relax and recharge, it’s also one of the best opportunities to prepare for a successful DECA competition season. Taking a few small steps during the summer can help reduce stress, build confidence and set you up for success when competitions begin.

Whether you’re competing in a prepared event or a role-play event, getting started early can make a huge difference.

Prepared Events

For members competing in prepared events, summer is the perfect time to begin brainstorming and researching. Start by reviewing the event guidelines and performance indicators so you understand exactly what judges will be looking for. From there, begin exploring topics that interest you and gathering credible sources that may support your project.

Here are a few ways to get started:

  • Review your event guidelines and scoring rubric.
  • Brainstorm project ideas and possible research topics.
  • Create a rough outline for your paper or presentation.

You don’t need to have your entire project completed before school starts, but creating a foundation now can save valuable time later. Summer preparation allows you to focus on developing stronger ideas rather than rushing to meet deadlines during the school year.

Role-play Events

If you’re competing in a role-play event, consistency is key. Spend time becoming familiar with your event’s performance indicators and practice applying them to real business situations. Reading business articles, following industry trends and reviewing sample role-play scenarios can help strengthen your understanding of common concepts.

Here are a few ways to prepare:

  • Review performance indicators for your event.
  • Read business and marketing articles regularly.
  • Practice role-plays with friends, advisors or chapter officers.
  • Strengthen your public speaking and presentation skills.

Make sure to include exam preparation in your summer plans. A little practice now can go a long way in strengthening your knowledge and setting you up for success during competition season.

Looking Ahead

Competition success doesn’t happen overnight. By spending even a small amount of time preparing this summer, you’ll begin the school year feeling more confident, organized and ready to take on the challenges ahead. Your future self will thank you when competition season arrives!
