How to Choose Your DECA Competitive Event

Sep 1, 2025

One of the most exciting things about joining DECA is choosing your competitive event. With so many categories, it can be overwhelming at first, but your event should challenge you and also cater to your strengths.

Step one is to think about your interests. Are you interested in public speaking, problem solving, marketing or finance? If you like presenting ideas, roleplay events are a good fit. If you want to work with numbers or write, prepared events or written projects are the way to go.

When I chose my event, I chose Project Management: Community Awareness because I was interested in mental health. I had an advocacy group for mental health and wanted to use that project to actually make a difference while I competed. Because I was interested in it, I performed well in the process and ended up loving every part of my event.

It also helps to capitalize on your strengths. What are you best at? Are you a fast thinker, a team player or strong in research and writing? DECA has events for all skill sets, so play to your strengths.

Your future goals can also help eliminate the options. If you are interested in business administration, entrepreneurship or hotel management, choose an event that is in line with your career path. Not only will it set you up for the future, but it will also keep you inspired when gearing up for competition.

Don't be afraid to try something new. Most members discover their top event by stepping outside their comfort zone and doing something they never imagined they would enjoy.

Finally, ask for advice. Your advisor, chapter officers or older members can give you the inside scoop on every event and help you determine one that fits your personality and interests.

At the end of the day, there is no wrong event. Every category is designed to make you grow, learn and show your strengths. My PMCA project taught me that if you choose something you are passionate about, the work does not feel like work but a purpose. That is what DECA is all about: doing something you love and doing something that makes you grow through opportunities.

Best of luck to all our competitors this year, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
