While Hamilton wrote 51 essays to defend the Constitution, which we still acknowledge today, we only have to write one for college. One simple yet weighted essay, just a few hundred words, can redirect our lives.

So here are three factors to consider as you brainstorm your college essay topic:

1. Authenticity

The college essay isn’t about being perfect or incredibly DECA-cated (even though this is an amazing trait to have); it’s about being real. Admissions officers don’t want an AI robot version of us; they want to hear our actual voice and see who we truly are. That’s why choosing a topic that acknowledges the lessons you've learned so far in life will get you farther than bragging about everything you’ve done and the “perfection” you may have.

2. Purpose

When selecting your college essay topic, several factors come into play, including your identity, role, accomplishments and goals. Beyond those factors, ask yourself, what does it serve in your life? Does it help you with everyday problems? Has it challenged you to be better? The purpose of choosing your topic should be to effectively share your story and demonstrate the potential that you want to tap into.

3. Growth

What really matters is showing change and what you found or discovered within your essay, whether it’s something about yourself or a newfound passion. Think about it this way: if you read a story where the character never grew up or changed their flaws to be better, would you still read the story? Colleges want to see how we’ve changed, what we’ve learned and how it’s shaping the person we’re becoming. The best essays demonstrate that there was a before and after, and that their topic evoked an experience that held meaning.

So no, we don’t need to write 51 essays like Hamilton to prove why we should be accepted into our dream college. You don’t need to have 50 non-profits, own 10 businesses or even be an ICDC winner to have an outstanding essay. You just need one topic that’s honest, authentic and shows your purpose and potential.

A college essay can be your shot, your chance to stand out and take the next step…and maybe even ‘get a scholarship to King’s College’.
