DECA’s competitive events program is one of the most exciting parts of being a member. It challenges you to apply your business knowledge to real-world scenarios, pushes you to be creative and helps you grow professionally and personally.
There is a category for everyone, ranging from marketing and finance to hospitality and entrepreneurship.
However, with so many options, how do you find your fit? Check out these tips on how to choose your competitive event:
1. Understand the Categories
DECA competitive events are separated into career clusters, based on different industries.
Next, you’ll want to decide on the type of event. You can compete in either a role play, which requires quick thinking, or a prepared event, which requires in-depth research and planning.
Once you make those decisions, you can decide to compete alone, with a partner or in a group.
2. Assess Your Skills and Interests
Next, ask yourself some questions. What are you good at? Can you think outside the box and come up with creative solutions? If so, you may want to choose an event in Marketing, Hospitality and Tourism, or Entrepreneurship.
Are you good at math and enjoy analyzing data? Maybe an accounting or personal finance event is a good fit for you.
Reflect on your skills and passions to find an event that you will enjoy and reach your full potential in.
3. Ask for Advice
Talk to your classmates, chapter leaders and advisors for guidance on competitive event selection. More likely than not, they will be happy to help and can provide you with great insight based on their unique experiences.
4. Practice
Search online for sample role-plays and exams to get a feel for the event. Many resources are available on DECA.org, DECA Direct Online, and DECA+.
Also, read the event descriptions and examine the performance indicators. Practicing will build your confidence and help you discover which event is the best fit for you.
