Changing schools can be an emotionally charged time for anyone, especially when you’re going from high school to college. For many, you’re moving away from your family home and to a new town, maybe even a new state or country! I bet you’re excited to explore and meet new people, but also nervous at the same time. Or maybe you’re worried about paying tuition. Clearly, heading to college comes with many changes, but I’m here to help.
Below, I’ve outlined some helpful tips to help you take on your first year in college!
1. Attend an Organization Fair
Every campus likely hosts an organization fair for all the groups on campus around the beginning of each semester to allow students to see what is offered. I highly suggest joining at least two groups (in addition to your DECA involvement!) since these groups will allow you opportunities to meet new people and be involved in things you enjoy.
2. Attend Class and Complete Your Classwork
I can’t stress this one enough. You’re now in charge of your own schedule and can decide when to take classes, so I encourage finding what works. Your professors will notice if you’re in class or not. You’re also paying for the classes, so don’t waste money by not showing up.
3. Meet Your Professors
Many professors have worked in the field they are now teaching and love to tell students about their experiences. These professors may also offer you once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I was able to tour the largest casino in the world with one of the professors on campus because he taught a graduate-level course on casino management and thought I’d be interested in joining.
4. Use Campus Resources
Your campus has many resources to help you succeed in all aspects of your life. If you ask, you’ll likely find the resources that help make good financial decisions, such as tutoring opportunities, counseling services, etc.
5. Find a Part-time Job
If you’re worried about paying tuition, wanting extra spending money, or finding yourself with extra time, consider applying for a part-time job. This is the perfect way to spend some extra time you might have productively, since you’re also gaining experience that you can put on your resume! You’ll also meet new people at your job and could create some amazing friendships.
Advice from some of our current Collegiate DECA members:
“Don’t be afraid to reach out to members from different schools, associations, etc. Collegiate [DECA] is much smaller and... those connections can in turn help build your own chapter, advance your success in DECA and even lead to leadership opportunities.” - Nelli McLeod, Indiana University Indianapolis
“Use campus resources and get involved... Getting involved helps you find people who will study with you, push you and make memories with you. Most importantly, enjoy the time while it lasts because it flies by.” – Roger Trinidad, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
“Have the mindset that you will be successful wherever you end up in life. You are not limited, you are limitless if you want to be.” – Xavier Sandoval, Johnson & Whales.
Your first year in college will be very different from anything you’ve experienced before, so make sure to enjoy your time and make the most of it. If you find something that sounds interesting, try it. If it makes you happy, pursue it. If you don’t like it, now you know you don’t like it and don’t have to do it again. College is the perfect time for you to learn who you are and grow.
