Experience The Difference in your competitive results by trying this four-step technique with your prepared written events!

1. Brainstorm your Passions and Hobbies

Knowing that you’ll spend the next nine months working on this one project, you want to make sure it is something that you genuinely enjoy. So, start from that part and spend 2-3 days brainstorming and writing down all your hobbies and passions.

2. Look at the Category Clusters on DECA.org

Once you’ve determined your general topic/idea of interest, it is time to mold it under DECA’s written competitive event categories. Take a few hours to go through all the written event category clusters. Look at their guidelines, rubrics and sample paper. Decide which general career cluster you think would best fit you.

3. Begin Research

Having a general career cluster and topic in mind, you can research the ideas forming in your head. Use the career cluster’s general opinions and your heart’s passion to guide yourself in researching all the possible combinations of the two – make sure your idea is attainable and realistic.

4. Choose your Category and Begin Work

Finally, having done the bone work necessary to ensure you love your future project and it is attainable, decide on a specific category and begin work! It is recommended that you have your category chosen at least one month before the new school year begins.
