6 Ways to Make the Most of Your Summer Jobs and Internships

Jun 5, 2023

Summer is a great way to prepare for your future! If you're looking to maximize the benefits of your summer jobs and internships, here are six key strategies to keep in mind:

1. Network

Summer jobs and internships are a great way to grow your connections. Remember to be professional when introducing yourself to any new connection. It's always a good idea to have a business card on hand, remember to include your contact information including an email you wouldn't be embarrassed to use in a college application. You can also opt for a digital business card by using a QR code or app. Create your Business card using canva!

2. Set Goals and Be Proactive

What do you want out of this experience, connections, industry exposure, a mentor? What are the steps that you will take to reach these goals? Write them down. Be proactive, seek out new roles and responsibilities. Show that you are dedicated to getting the job done. Try organizing a supply room or wiping down countertops.

3. Seek Feedback

Even if you are doing a great job there is always room for improvement! Be sure to ask your supervisors for feedback so you can get the most out of the work you are doing. Make every experience a learning opportunity. It's ok to make mistakes but make sure you don't make those same mistakes again.

4. Take Breaks

It's always great to be a go-getter but remember to take time for yourself too. Take breaks, remember to drink water and take some deep breaths. You don’t want to burn out.

5. Stay Organized

What organizational strategies work best for you? Make sure you keep an organized calendar (either electronic or paper) of all due dates and events. Keep your work and personal space tidy so that you have one less thing to worry about.

6. Update Your Resume

Make sure you add your experience to your resume and your LinkedIn profile. Think of two-three new skills you learned, don't leave this out when updating your resume. This will help you in the future with jobs, college applications and scholarships.
