Celebrate DECA Alumni Recognition Week
Get your chapter ready to celebrate DECA’s first Alumni Recognition Week from February 8-12, 2021 during Career and Technical Education Month®!
As DECA nears the kick-off to its year-long 75th Anniversary Celebration, the organization has impacted the lives of more than ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals since it was founded. Alumni are a pivotal, yet often untapped resource to help take your chapter’s professional development to the next level.
Use these activities to recognize the contributions of alumni and encourage them to get involved with your chapter. Be sure to use the hashtag #DECAAlumni to share your activities and highlight your alumni during Alumni Recognition Week!
Ideas to Engage Alumni
Utilize Their Experience – There’s no better source of experience than DECA alumni who were once in your shoes. Invite alumni to connect with your chapter by volunteering as guest speakers or panelists, assisting in the training of chapter leaders, hosting virtual business tours, serving as mentors or allowing their organizations to be used by members for competitive events.
Start an Alumni Facebook Group – As much as alumni enjoy sharing their knowledge and experiences with current members, they also enjoy the opportunity to connect with their former classmates. Creating an Alumni Facebook Group for your chapter is a great way to capture new alumni each year, and build a community.
Launch an Alumni Newsletter – Keep in touch with your alumni through a monthly or quarterly e-newsletter. Here you can share chapter highlights, upcoming events and opportunities for alumni to connect with current members and other alumni.
Create a Monthly Alumni Spotlight – Use your chapter’s social media and other communications channels to feature alumni each month. These could be in the form of a photo and “Where Are They Now?” description, a Q&A with advice for members or even a video spotlight. Sharing success stories can also be a great recruitment strategy!
Establish an Annual Alumni Recognition Award – Consider creating an annual award to recognize the contributions of outstanding alumni. This can be presented at your chapter’s annual banquet or end-of-year celebration. Some chapters have also created a “DECA Diamond Alumni” group to recognize distinguished alumni.
Invite Them to Volunteer – Encourage alumni to share their expertise as a competitive events judge at the district, association or international level. This year, volunteering with DECA is easier than ever as many opportunities are virtual and allow projects to be evaluated on-demand, instead of requiring a full-day, in-person commitment. Of course, you can also use alumni as judges for a chapter mock competition or mentors to help members prepare.
Register Alumni as Official DECA Members – Keep your alumni involved and boost your chapter’s membership. Alumni members receive a pin and card, a one-year subscription to the DECA Direct digital magazine, and the value of supporting an organization that has impacted them. As a bonus, recruit five or more alumni or professional members during February, and your chapter will receive a full set of digital Team Decision Making Case Studies and Principles of Business Administration Role-Plays from Shop DECA!
