If you’re like me, you’re approaching graduation very soon and you’re probably wondering what happens to the organization you’ve spent so many years being a part of. The good news is that there are several opportunities for you to stay involved as an alum!

Does Your DECA Involvement End at Graduation?

No, absolutely not!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve interacted with businesspeople who find out I’m affiliated with DECA and ask me “Oh, I participated in DECA. Is that still around?”

Yes, it is, and we’re still going strong.

Throughout my time as a DECA student member, it’s been fun seeing the different involvement that alumni members have, but what I want you to know right now is that you don’t have to say goodbye to your beloved organization just yet.

Four Action-Packed Opportunities for DECA Alumni

Now that you know your DECA involvement doesn’t have to stop at graduation, here are three opportunities you can be involved with as an alumni member:

  1. Join the Alumni Program
  2. Volunteer at Regional, Association and International Conferences
  3. Become a DECA Advisor or Association Director
  4. Work for DECA Inc.

Are you excited yet? Let’s explore these opportunities a little more.

1. Join the Alumni Program

In case you’re wondering who an alumni member is, here’s how we define it:

  • Individuals who have graduated and want to stay involved by paying the appropriate DECA Inc. and chartered association dues.
  • Alumni members will receive a pin and card, a one-year subscription to DECA Direct (if an address is provided) and the value of supporting an organization that has benefitted them.

Alumni members should join through their local chapter as a great way to network with the current members. You can even volunteer as an industry speaker and talk to the chapter members about how you have leveraged your DECA experience in your career. I’ve met some amazing DECA alumni this way, including former executive officers.

2. Volunteer at Regional, Association and International Conferences

I think this is my favorite opportunity! I’ve volunteered as a judge at High School DECA conferences before in New Jersey and I absolutely love it. It’s a way for me to give back to the organization that helped develop me.

At DECA, we’re always on the hunt for business leaders and professionals to judge at ICDC and other conferences, so we’d love to have you! As our membership grows, so does our need for judges. You can learn about volunteering here.

3. Become a DECA Advisor or Association Director

If you want to help serve as a chapter advisor or association director, ask the current leadership or school for how you can get involved. These opportunities may be harder to come by, so don’t feel discouraged if you can’t get involved immediately.

The good news is that these positions can be long-term, so you can really sink your teeth into the role and make a difference.

4. Work for DECA Inc.

Did you know that you can work for DECA Inc.?

If not, check out the careers page to find the latest job openings. Consummating your involvement with DECA by working for the amazing organization that gave so much to you might be the perfect fit.
