DECA Inc. Recognizes M. Andy Chaves of Marriott with Chairman’s Award

Andy ChavesThe DECA Inc. Chairman’s Award recognizes the outgoing chairman of DECA’s National Advisory Board (NAB). An individual eligible for this award is the outgoing NAB chairman who has supported DECA at the international level in a significant way for a minimum of five years, and from whom DECA may reasonably expect continued support of its activities.

M. Andy Chaves began his partnership with DECA over 15 years ago, by becoming a member of the National Advisory Board (NAB). After serving as a member of the Executive Committee for many years, he began serving as Chair of the NAB and as a member of the DECA Inc. Board of Directors in December 2017. He currently serves as a member of the NAB Executive Committee.

Through his dedication to preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, Andy has partnered with educators, advisors and administrators to promote DECA and career and technical education at the local, state and international levels.

His most noteable contributions include assisting DECA secure over $1 million in grants from the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation and attending DECA events all across the country as a sponsor, volunteer and mentor. Over 2,000 DECA members have been hired to work with Marriott International, Inc.

The Senior Executive of Youth Strategies and Partnerships, Andy has been with Marriott International, Inc. for more than 29 years. A graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, he has more than 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

Andy has worked in lodging operations at more than 10 hotel and conference resort properties and has spent the last 20 years in human resources both in the North American lodging division and at Marriott International Corporate Headquarters. Andy directs Marriott’s Workforce Programs and Global Diversity and Inclusion initiatives including language development programs (Global Language Learning), diversity recruitment relationships, career development initiatives and retention initiatives. As the head of youth programs at Marriott, Andy promotes and supports public/private partnerships through career and technical education (CTE) programs. Andy serves as a liason to many CTE programs and councils.

DECA commends Andy for his service as NAB Chair. Congratulations to M. Andy Chaves on this much-deserved recognition as a recipient of the Chairman’s Award.

Andy will be presented with his honor at the 2021 DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California.
