Global Entrepreneurship is Here to Help You

Emma Daley

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2018 (GEW) is this here and entrepreneurs around the world are ready to share with you just what it takes to be an entrepreneur!

A main goal of GEW is to celebrate the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. For one week every November, GEW inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.

Now, Global Entrepreneurship Week is not just for the powerful, successful adults in the world, even you as a DECA student can get involved!

The DECA Idea Challenge

The DECA Idea Challenge dares students around the world to generate an innovative use for a common, everyday object. Students pitch their creative innovations in a short three-minute video presentation. The item will be released at 4:00pm EST on November 9, 2018. The video submissions will be due at 11:59pm EST on November 18, 2018, and winners will be announced on January 4, 2019.

How to Involve Your DECA Project

Global Entrepreneurship Week also thrives from events and even looks to students to participate! Events, workshops, panels, conferences, just about anything you can think of to influence entrepreneurship can be used as a GEW event. These events can even be used as events for your project!

Here are some examples of fun, creative events GEW suggests students take part in:

Students Run a Business for a Day: Students create a simulation of a business in a classroom workshop and learn to be a boss to discover what it is like to run a company.

Entrepreneurship Lecture Series: Host a lecture series on entrepreneurship! Bring entrepreneurs or program leaders to your campus or school to discuss their programs further and allow students to gain more insight into the possibilities of entrepreneurship.

Music Festivals: Here is a creative one! Create a music festival with local bands or musicians for your community. Artists can showcase their talents on stage to demonstrate that the title “entrepreneur” can be very broad.

Spotlight on the Entrepreneurs: You have heard of Sundance and the Tribeca film festivals, well get ready for the entrepreneur film festival! Have students submit videos discussing the topic of entrepreneurship and hold a film festival to showcase it. Even take it a step further and talk to leaders in entrepreneurship to gain insight on their experiences!

Entrepreneurship Career Fair: Invite entrepreneurs to teach students about what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and inspire a new generation of innovators in your community.

Art + Entrepreneurship: Host an art fair featuring artists who explore the characteristics of entrepreneurship: opportunity recognition, creativity, problem-solving, risk-taking, resourcefulness and passion for ideas.

Global Entrepreneurship Week will not only help your project but with the vast amount of creative and fun events you can host, you can help your local community, school or surrounding peers. And just as DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, you can contribute to this DECA legacy!
