It Can Wait, It’s Worth The Wait
Did you know that nearly 9 in 10 people admit to using their smartphone while driving? And, nearly 4 in 10 drivers call distracted driving a habit?1
DECA is teaming up with AT&T to spread the word in asking others “Please don’t drive distracted” and help remind everyone that when you’re behind the wheel – It Can Wait. It Can Wait is a national movement, started by AT&T, to help put an end to smartphone distracted driving. It Can Wait encourages individuals to take a pledge to drive distraction-free. DECA and AT&T are collaborating to launch a ‘text-to-pledge’ challenge.
This challenge, sponsored by DECA, encourages participation from chapters and associations to secure the most pledges. Using these rules, DECA members are encouraged to promote AT&T’s It Can Wait movement throughout their school and community. The ‘text-to-pledge’ challenge is open to all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico.
(Participation is limited to these associations because the codes will only work with United States telecommunications carriers.)
Each eligible association has been assigned a unique ‘text-to-pledge’ code. This will track the number of pledges from that state. Additionally, states have been divided into three groups based on membership size in 2017-2018. The state in each group with the highest number of pledges by March 29, 2019 will be recognized in April at ICDC and awarded $1000. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month. In honor of this, DECA will reward associations’ efforts to help end distracted driving from now until March 29, 2019.
Participants should text the specified state codes below to 50555 in order to record a pledge for the state.
To take the pledge, text the code assigned to your state to 50555. As a chapter, develop creative ways to promote AT&T’s It Can Wait campaign and encourage pledges.
The pledges may be collected from students of driving age, parents, friends, and community members. Advisors can find resources to help promote It Can Wait here. Ideas for promotion include:
- Make a presentation at a local DECA meeting
- Plan a schoolwide promotion during lunch
- Share a presentation at a school board meeting
- Create an exhibit and/or presentation for a PTA meeting
- Host an event (5K or similar community event)
- Collaborate with the driver’s education program at school to share the message
- Set up a table/exhibit at a school sporting event
- Collaborate with the local motor vehicle department to promote the message to new drivers
