DECA Scholarships FAQs
DECA and its corporate partners provide over $300,000 in scholarships to DECA and Collegiate DECA members each year.
To help you better understand DECA’s scholarship process, check out these frequently asked questions and get the answers you need to win a scholarship this year!
Q: Do I have to be a current DECA/Collegiate DECA member to apply for DECA Scholarships?
A: Yes, you must be a current DECA member to be eligible for DECA scholarships.
Q: What are the requirements to become a DECA Member?
A: Ask your school counselor if you school has a DECA chapter and register through your chapter advisor. For Collegiate DECA members that do not have a chapter, you may apply as an individual member.
Q: How do I apply for DECA Scholarship?
A: Go to http://www.deca.org/scholarships to apply.
Q: What is the deadline to submit my application?
A: The deadline to submit your application is January 18, 2019.
Q: Whom do I contact if I forget my user name and/or password?
A: Click on the link within the scholarship site or call DECA at 703 860-5000 and ask for the Development department.
Q: Can I apply for more than one scholarship?
A: Yes, you may apply for more than one scholarship as long as you meet the criteria for each scholarship.
Q: Does my student profile information export over to the scholarship applications?
A: Yes, data from your Student Profile carries over to automatically fill in certain fields (i.e. name, address, school, DECA involvement, etc.).
Q: Does my advisor have access to my profile?
A: No, your profile is strictly confidential unless you provide the advisor with your user name and password.
Q: How much information should I include in the profile for DECA activities?
A: You should include as much as possible in the long answer section. For your DECA activities, include ALL details from your time with DECA.
Q: Do I have to be a high school DECA senior to apply?
A: No, all grade levels (from high school freshmen to Collegiate DECA members) are welcome to apply. Unless the scholarship application specifically requires a grade level/collegiate, you can safely assume that all members can apply.
Q: Are DECA scholarships based on financial need?
A: No, most of DECA scholarships are merit-based.
Q: Do I have to be an employee or child of the corporate sponsored scholarships?
A: You are not required to be a relative/employee in order to apply for most of our corporate scholarships. Some of our donors such as NAPA, Publix and Marriott International give special attention to applicants who work for them. Check out www.deca.org/scholarships.
Q: Are there scholarships specifically for School-Based Enterprises?
A: Yes! Arytza (Otis Spunkmeyer) does provide scholarships for students that run a SBE selling Arytza (Otis Spunkmeyer) products.
Q: Do I have to be interested in a particular career or industry for some scholarships?
A: Some such as, AICPA, NAPA and Marriott International do provide scholarships that are focused toward a specific industry and/or career interest. Check out www.deca.org/scholarships.
Q: Once my application is submitted can I go back in and make changes?
A: No, once you submit your application you cannot make any further changes.
Q: What happens if I make the qualifying round?
A: DECA will notify you via email that you have made the qualifying round and provide you the list of additional materials required.
Q: What materials need to be submitted if I make the qualifying round?
A: You will be asked to submit up to three letters of reference and your transcripts.
Q: What happens if I haven’t taken my ACT/SAT?
A: You must include a statement indicating so.
Q: Are unofficial transcripts accepted?
A: Yes, you may submit unofficial transcripts.
Q: What is the deadline for submitting my supporting materials?
A: DECA will notify you of the deadline once it is determined that you have made the qualifying round.
Q: How will I know if I win a scholarship?
A: DECA will notify your chapter advisor and send you an email.
Q: Do I have to attend the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) if I win a scholarship?
A: No, you do not need to attend ICDC in order to receive your scholarship.
Q: Should I win a scholarship, do I get to meet the sponsor and/or be able to send a thank you letter?
A: Yes, you will be able to meet the sponsor if you attend ICDC. DECA will also email you contact information to send a thank you letter.
Q: Can my scholarship be deferred?
A: Yes, your scholarship can be deferred for up to three years.
Q: Where are the scholarship monies sent?
A: Monies are sent directly to the college/university that you will be attending.
Q: Can I use the scholarship if I am a part-time student?
A: No, you must be enrolled as a full-time student at a college/university.
Q: How does DECA know where to send the scholarship monies?
A: DECA will contact you via email to request this information.
