Mark Your Calendars: The Second Round of DECA’s Virtual Business Challenge Begins This January!
Are you looking for an opportunity to earn a spot at the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Ga., this spring? Would you like to build industry skills within the comfort of your home or school? Look no further than DECA’s Virtual Business Challenges (VBC).
Brought to you by Knowledge Matters, DECA’s VBC is engaging opportunity for students to utilize an online simulation platform to develop industry-specific skills in a variety of career areas. The virtual simulation is FREE to all active high school DECA members. No installations or downloads are necessary to participate in any of the challenges. Challenge participants will even enjoy almost 100% of the functionality of the classroom simulation.
DECA’s Virtual Business Challenge tracks include:
- VBC Accounting
- VBC Fashion
- VBC Hotel Management/DECA Hotel Challenge (Presented by the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation)
- VBC Personal Finance
- VBC Restaurant
- VBC Retailing
- VBC Sports
Students may participate individually or in a group of up to three members from the same DECA chapter. Each team can engage in as many tracks as they would like at the same time as long as each participant is not a member of more than one team in a specific track.
DECA members who did not participate in round one may participate in round two. The two rounds are scored separately and are independent of one other.
Advisors who previously participated in round one can now log into their advisor accounts and make any necessary changes to VBC teams from round one. Teams will remain unlocked until January 8, 2018. Please utilize the same login information to access round two of the Virtual Business Challenge.
If you did not previously participate in DECA’s Virtual Business Challenge, but are an active DECA chapter advisor, an advisor account has been created for you. Please contact Maureen Ginley with Knowledge Matters at firstname.lastname@example.org for login information.
Chapter advisors must approve each team’s VBC registration for the students to have access to the simulation.
ROUND TWO UPDATES
Round two of the Virtual Business Challenge will last 11 days. This newly abbreviated time frame will encourage students to focus on making impactful decisions for their virtual business. Also new to this round, VBC Personal Finance will now include the option of investing.
As a result of these updates, participants will not be able to use multiple simulation windows simultaneously. This will be applied to the simulations for all VBC tracks. Knowledge Matters ensures this will make for a more fair, challenging and interesting competition. If participants do attempt to run the competition simulation in more than one window, the simulation will lock teams out for a period of one hour. Additionally, to ensure that no advantage was gained by dual windows being opened, the simulation will automatically be reset.
The top performing team, per track, in each chartered association will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement. Additionally, the top two teams, per track, in each region from both round one and round two will be eligible to compete at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), providing you meet your chartered association rules and regulations. A participant who qualifies for ICDC in round one can participate in round two, but simulation scores will not be used in determining round two ICDC qualifiers. See challenge guidelines for more information on ICDC qualifications.
