Discovering the Power of Synergy

William Huang | Power Trip Power Team

While at the 2017 Ultimate DECA Power Trip, I was able to attend an amazing workshop lead by Todd Gehrmann, CEO and Founder of Focus Training.

His goal was simple – to teach us what the word synergy meant.

We started off with a simple pinky linkers activity to partner everyone up into groups of two. We continued doing this until we were all in groups of eight. From there we choose a team leader, by who had the best finger nails (I guess manicures are useful). After we picked a team leader, we gave quick introductions to get to know our group better.

Right after introductions is when everything went crazy. Before we could start the activity, we had to tie all our hands together, so basically if one person moved the whole group was moving. Then we had seven minutes to blow up balloons and use limited tape to build the highest possible tower. The key to this was teamwork, and that is where synergy comes in.

Synergy is basically 2+2+2+2 = 1000. The result is greater than the sum of its parts is the official definition. This activity showed us how companies/organizations form teams and communicate in order to better themselves. To succeed in this activity, as well as, in life you must always be able to work with people and be willing to communicate with them.
