Finding Where the “Power” in #DECAPowerTrip Comes From

Like all good things, the 2017 #DECAPowerTrip had to come to an end.
While the conference may have come to a close, its impact and message will follow members for years to come. One of the most powerful things about 2017 Ultimate DECA Power Trip is how it brought so many people together in such a short period of time. The relationships formed throughout the weekend will follow us for years to come. We came into opening ceremony as strangers and left the closing ceremony as a family.
To kick the ceremony off, competitors took the stage to compete in the mobile app pitch competition. These entrepreneurial groups pitched their innovative app ideas to the room. These groups included “We The Community,” “1Media,” and “Reach.” At the end of their pitches, members voted on who they thought deserved the number one spot. After a close race, 1Media’s idea of an app that brings together all of your social media accounts into one was declared the winner.
After the app pitch competition, role-play competition winners from across the country were recognized for their hard work during the weekend’s competitive excellence challenge. Those winners will be taking home some DECA bling courtesy of Johnson & Wales University.
Last but certainly not least, keynote speaker EJ Carrion took the stage by storm. EJ brought the energy of the room to the next level. He knew exactly how to pump everyone up and bring attention to him and his message. The story of his ascension from an average student to entrepreneur was inspiring and heartfelt. He pushed the idea of hustling, patience, and finding your passion.
His story and message was a perfect way to send off this year’s #DECAPowerTrip. He reinforced the idea of owning your future and carving a path for yourself, and to serve others. His energy embodied the spirit of DECA. To be creative, ambitious, kind, and hardworking. This weekend has given me perspective and ideas for my future and how to attain my goals.
Now I know where the “Power” in #DECAPowerTrip comes from.
