A New Way to Fundraise

For many chapters, it is hard to come up with new and exciting fundraisers to kick off the school year. However, chapters have found great success with Penny Wars, a school wide battle to raise money!

This is a great activity to raise general funds or support an amazing cause like the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

How It Works

Each grade will have a designated water jug (this is important so people don’t reach in and grab the money). For one week, the jugs will be set out in a common area, like a cafe or library. During this week students are encouraged to drop their loose change into the jug that correspondets with their grade level.

Here is where it gets fun – for every penny the grade gets a point, and for every non-penny the grade gets negative points. At the end of the week, the total points will be added and a grade will be the winner!

Below are some helpful first steps to get started:

Step 1: Pick a date and get it approved with your school administration.

Step 2: Select the point values for the change. An example of this is:

Pennies= 10 points
Nickels= -5 points
Quarters= -25 points
Dollar Bills= -30 points
Ten Dollar Bill= -75 points

Step 3: Select a prize for the winning class. Make sure you get this cleared with your administration as well. Some great ideas are extended lunch, an ice cream social or an off-campus lunch.

Step 3: Advertise the event heavily to make sure the whole school knows and is excited to participate!

With these first few steps, you are on your way to some friendly class competition and a great opportunity to bring in some money for your chapter!
