DECA Inc. Honors Six Education Leaders with the Outstanding Service Award at #DECAICDC

DECA Inc. congratulates six recipients of the DECA Inc. Outstanding Service Award, one of DECA’s most prestigious recognitions.

Recipients were recognized at this year’s DECA International Career Development Conference (#DECAICDC) in Anaheim, Calif.

This award acknowledges marketing or business education personnel who have rendered distinguished contributions to further the mission of DECA Inc. at the international level for more than five years. This year, DECA is honored to recognize chapter advisors, chartered association advisors, Career and Technical Education leaders and former DECA Inc. staff with this award.

Donna McFadden
Donna McFadden has served as the Massachusetts DECA chartered association advisor for over 20 years, coordinating and directing the management of approximately 100 high school DECA chapters with 6,000 student members. Donna is recognized for her service on DECA’s councils as well as her participation in DECA’s membership development project which has led to increased membership and participation.

Mary Peres
Mary Peres has been involved in DECA for over 40 years, first as a chapter advisor, New York DECA regional representative, New York DECA board of trustee and currently as the New York DECA chartered association advisor. Mary is recognized for her service to DECA Inc.’s Board of Directors, including currently serving as President-Elect and formerly serving as treasurer. Mary has also served as an event director at ICDC for 15 years.

Rhonda Samples
Rhonda Samples is currently the Career Technical & Agricultural Education (CTAE) Director with Hall County Schools in Georgia, where she serves as an instructional leader in implementing appropriate CTE programs and pathways as well as work-based learning opportunities. Rhonda has previously served as a DECA chapter advisor and Georgia DECA chartered association advisor for over 20 years. Rhonda is recognized for her six years of service as a competitive events coordinator at ICDC.

Sherry Siler
Sherry Siler has served as a marketing instructor and DECA chapter advisor in Arkansas for over 25 years. Sherry is recognized for her seven years of service as an ICDC competitive events coordinator and nine years of service as a ICDC competitive events series director. In addition, Sherry has served twice on DECA’s Competitive Events Taskforce. She is also the Association of Career and Technical Education region IV vice president.

Shane Thomas
Shane Thomas served as a DECA chapter advisor for six years and DECA Inc.’s director of competitive events for seven years. During his time at DECA Inc., Shane coordinated with curriculum agencies to ensure DECA’s competitive events were validated by industry professionals, conducted professional development training for high school and college educators and recruited industry volunteers for DECA Inc. events. While in his position, participation exponentially grew in DECA’s competitive events program and school-based enterprise program.

Dr. Michelle Walker
Michelle Walker served as DECA Inc.’s director of education for ten years, retiring in August 2016. In this role, Dr. Walker created new professional learning programs to help educators integrate DECA’s comprehensive learning program into classroom instruction. These included advisor summer institutes and conferences, a train the trainer certification course, eLearning methods, customized trainings and the establishment of a professional learning advisory board. In addition, Dr. Walker fostered numerous outreach opportunities, including co-authoring a marketing education textbook, developing the DECA Idea Challenge through Global Entrepreneurship Week and participating in a variety of conferences showcasing the value of DECA.
