5 Things To Do Before Heading West

Congratulations to all those who qualified for the 2017 DECA International Career Development Conference!

Only the best head west, am I right? Now that all the nerves and excitement of your previously competitions have died down, it’s time to buckle down and prepare yourselves for international glory in Anaheim!

I’m right there with you through this preparation process, and are five things I think can help keep you polished before #DECAICDC!

1. Drill Exams

Exams are so important at ICDC!! If you qualify to be a finalist, your exam score will carry on for this final round, with fiercer competition. Exams are weighted a lot heavier than most people think, and your score on this is a deciding factor on whether or not you will make it on stage. Even if you did well on your previous exams, keep it up! On the other hand, if you didn’t, here’s your chance to change that before the real deal! Check out another DECA Direct article, “4 Excellent Resources to Use as You Study for the DECA Exam,” for some useful study tips!

2. Utilize Feedback From States

Especially if you are doing a written event, you now have the golden opportunity to make some minor changes in your plan as you see fit. You even have the benefit of getting a judge’s perspective! If your judge was kind enough to leave comments, use those comments to teak your presentation! If your judge merely gave you back a score, you can use their enthusiasm during your presentation to judge which parts they enjoyed and which you could maybe alter.

3. Practice Your Presentation

If you don’t constantly remind yourself of your presentation/speech, chances are it will be rusty when you pick it back up in Anaheim. Just because it went well at states doesn’t mean you should slack off! Still keep memorizing your speech, saying it before you go to bed at night, make sure you don’t forget it!

4. Dress for Success

There are many events to dress up for at #DECAICDC, and you want to leave a good impression on your judge! Make sure you have enough professional outfits to rotate through and you bring all the appropriate clothes for your competitions. Need some help deciding what to wear? The DECA Inc. “What to Wear” Pinterest board has ton of ideas and examples of professional dress outfits for guys and girls. Don’t forget your cute and comfy clothes for Disneyland too!

5. Be Prepared (to compete but also have fun!)

Obviously, preparing yourself for competition is crucial to your success at ICDC, but after all that studying and stressing, make sure to have some fun too! Come on, it’s Anaheim! Present to your best ability but don’t forget to enjoy the sun and your friends! Thank your advisors for all their help, and just be thankful you got this amazing opportunity to compete with some of the brightest business minds of our generation!

Hope to see you all loving life at the DECA Party at Universal!!

Hopefully this was a little surge of motivation to get yourself ready, and if you already have been then props to you! Let’s make #DECAICDC 2017 the best one yet!
