#CDECAICDC Competition Tips to Keep in Mind
It’s that time of year again! Are you ready to #OwnYourFuture in Anaheim, Calif., at #CDECAICDC?
This ICDC is shaping up to be an amazing conference exerperience and I know every competitor wants to take home one of those plaques!
Here are some competition tips I’ve gathered from former finalists and winners at past Collegiate ICDCs to help you bring home the gold:
1. Prepare early and often.
This is always the biggest and most important thing you can do to be successful at ICDC. Practice presenting to as many industry professionals as you can. This way you will be prepared no matter how your judge is. For written presentations also have your written piece looked over as many times as possible for suggestions.
2. Don’t forget about those exams!
This concept of preparation extends to events with exams too. Take as many practice tests as you can so you can get the feel for how that will go. Retake the practice exams until you get at least a 90% on them and you will be well prepared to take the real exam.
3. Be organized and speak clearly.
An easy way to set yourself apart from your competition is to be organized in how you present to the judges. Develop a flow to your presentation so that it is easy for the judge to see what you are trying to get across. To do this you have to speak clearly, use correct business terminology, and don’t use filler words like “um.”
4. Make yourself stand out.
You can do this in a few ways. First impressions matter, so be dressed sharply, have good hygiene and remember to smile. Greet the judges and thank them when you are done, because the small things matter and can be the difference between be on the podium or not.
5. Be confident!
This is my favorite piece, because it is so important to being successful at ICDC and in life. When you meet your judges, have good posture, smile and give them a firm handshake. If the judges feel that you are confident about what you are saying and have thought about it then they will feel that they can have confidence in what you are saying.
#CDECAICDC will be a great test of your preparation and abilities. Follow these tips and you will be even better prepared to succeed at ICDC!
Also, don’t forget to take a deep breath and look around at everything that is happening. The conference is also a great place to network with other Collegiate DECA members. Lastly, remember to have some fun along the way, it will make the conference even more meaningful for you!
