Competition Prep Best Practices from Smithtown DECA

It is competition season at Smithtown West DECA as our members gear up for the New York DECA Career Development Conference!

We have been working hard as a chapter to maximize our success at the association conference and wanted to share these tips with other chapters.

Principles/Team Decision/Individual Series Events

  • Guidance from chapter advisors and community leaders (mentors)
  • Provided members with practice tests
    • Can take them during our chapter supervised breakout sessions for advice
  • Provided members with practice role-plays
    • Can practice with community leaders (our mentors)

Written Events → Manuals

  • Guidance from chapter advisors and community leaders (mentors)
  • Practicing presenting
    • Present to chapter members, advisors, and mentors during breakout sessions

It is very important to our chapter we provide members with all the guidance we can so they are prepared to compete. In addition, we have hosted community fundraisers and events to raise money for the chapter.

Most recently, we hosted a Harlem Wizards game, in which the Harlem Wizards basketball team came to our school and played a very fun game of basketball with our Smithtown staff.

We had many people from our town come to watch and support our club as we also sold merchandise for the team, and food/drinks for fans.

Our chapter is truly working together to create a better experience for each member, and providing everyone with as many tools as possible to succeed!
