FIDM x DECA Takeover: An Inside Look at Hot Topic HQ
This article was originally published on the FIDM blog.
Making its presence in the pop culture scene, Hot Topic has always been the place to purchase band, film and TV show apparel. We were lucky to get an exclusive tour of Hot Topic, BoxLunch, Torrid and Lovesick headquarters.
While there, we took over the DECA Inc. Snapchat account to give outstanding high school students the scoop on professional tips and pursuing a career at Hot Topic. Check out our tour and hear job advice straight from their team below.
We started the tour at their front desk, which exhibited music videos, film clips and video game shorts on their large TV.
They also had furniture of popular memes, cartoons and bands. A great touch to the pop culture vibe, we may add!
After waiting in their insanely amazing lobby, we met with Recruitment Marketing Coordinator Amber Lena, who took us into their “Nightmare Before Chistmas”-themed conference room.
We then met with the Hot Topic team to discuss career advice. Take note of their professional tips.
TIP #1: COME TO THE TABLE WITH WHAT YOU’RE DOING.
Hot Topic Director of Merchandise Planning and FIDM Grad Rima Mahdavi believes an interviewee should present themselves with what they will bring to the company.
TIP #2: COME WITH QUESTIONS PREPARED.
Not asking questions after an interview is not ideal. Make sure to bring in questions about the company, its environment and how you can improve in the position you are applying for.
TIP #3: DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR YOUR COMPANY.
Hot Topic Recruiting Manager Johnny Sanchez shared that you should do research on the company and dress according to their culture.
TIP #4: CONFIDENCE IS KEY.
Hot Topic Recruitment Marketing Coordinator Amber Lena stresses that you should be yourself in an interview and own it. Wear something that represents a piece of yourself such as a “Game of Thrones” bracelet. (Fun fact: Lena wore a “Lord of the Rings” necklace to her interview and got the position!)
While receiving career advice, we even got a sneak peak into Hot Topic’s newest creation BoxLunch, which is the “grown up version” of their current business.
According to BoxLunch Assistant Buyer Jordan Miller, for every $10 spent, they donate a meal to a person in need in the store’s area.
After receiving a tour of Hot Topic headquarters, we headed over to Torrid and Lovesick, which cater to plus size fashion.
