Resources for Your DECA School-Based Enterprise
School-based Enterprises (SBEs) are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, SBEs provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills.
While some in the education community have only recently discovered the value of school-based enterprises, educators and DECA advisors have used them as a powerful teaching tool for more than four decades.
DECA offers a variety of resources for SBEs that include:
1. Chapter Certification
The School-based Enterprise (SBE) Chapter Certification Program provides recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and motivates SBEs to strive for excellence and growth. The program provides SBEs with standards for model operations and recognition at three levels: bronze, silver, and gold. When submitting the Chapter Certification project, SBEs must indicate whether they specialize in Food Operations or Retail Operations. Submission of certification project manuals will be accepted beginning January 3, 2017 and ending January 20, 2017.
2. Chapter Re-certification
When a school-based enterprise achieves certification at the gold level, they can apply to be gold recertified for four additional years by submitting the appropriate documentation. After five years (year of initial gold certification plus four additional years of re-certification), the SBE must complete the original gold certification process to be eligible for the gold level certification award. There is no option for re-certifying at the bronze or silver level. When submitting the Chapter Certification project, SBEs must indicate whether they specialize in Food Operations or Retail Operations.
3. Individual Certification
The Individual Certification Program reinforces the integration of National Curriculum Standards and 21stcentury employability skills into the SBE learning lab environment. Standards covered in both the written project and exam include retail, marketing and entrepreneurship concepts, and a range of business operations standards. Through this program, members can pursue individual certification in SBE operations through the successful completion of an online exam that measures knowledge and understanding of business operations concepts. Registration is now open for the 2016-2017 school year. The exam is offered on a rolling basis from October through June – simply sign up for the week you’d like to administer the exam. The process is entirely online and results are mailed directly to your school.
4. School-Based Enterprise Academy
The School-based Enterprise Academy is held annually during DECA’s International Career Development Conference and is available exclusively to Gold Certified and Gold Re-certified SBEs. The academy is designed to combine substantive educational experiences and competition with networking and vendor interaction.
5. Classroom Resources
Strengthen the connection between classroom learning and hands-on experience in your school-based enterprise by utilizing webinars, lesson plans, instructional units and product and vendor lists.
School-based Enterprises (SBEs) provide realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction. SBEs can sell to consumers through a permanent location, a mobile kiosk or through Internet marketing. Products may include spirit wear, food and beverage items, school supplies, signs and banners and more, while other SBEs provide services such as creative design, advertising sales and more.
