10 Ways to #OwnYourFuture This Year

This year’s theme, Own Your Future, means something different to everyone.

For some people, it means taking it upon yourself to develop skills that will help you be successful in the world of business. For others, our theme is all about becoming empowered to be a leader in your schools and communities.

Now is the time for you to define how you plan to Own Your Future during the 2016-2017 school year. Here are 10 ideas to get you started!

You can Own Your Future by…

Going for Gold in your Competitive Event
The biggest secret to making it on the #DECAICDC stage is studying! The more you study, the better your chances are of being a successful competitor, so take the time you have now to begin planning for your exams, role plays, and written events.

Attending a DECA Career Pathways Conference
Many people don’t know this, but DECA hosts three conferences during the school year that focus solely on preparing you for your future career! Join DECA in Washington, D.C., for the Innovations and Entrepreneurship Conference (Nov. 18-20), New York City for the New York Experience (Nov. 30-Dec. 3 or Dec. 7-10), or Orlando, Fla., for the Sports and Entertainment Marketing Conference (Jan. 25-29). Learn more about these conferences here.

Riding the Wave to Anaheim for ICDC
The International Career Development Conference is the pinnacle event of the DECA year! Join 18,000 members from around the world in Anaheim for four days of exciting competition and leadership academies – not to mention all of the fun to be had at Disneyland, Universal Studios, and all of Southern California’s major attractions!

Running for an Officer Position
Are you ready to take your DECA experience to the next level? If so, this is your year to run for a chapter, association, or executive officer position! Talk to your chapter and/or association advisor to see how you can become a DECA student leader.

Getting an Internship
Many colleges and business are looking carefully at applications to see what kind of experience you have in the workplace. Use this year to learn what the business world is really like by setting up an internship with a company in your community. Be sure to check out all the internship information DECA has on its Pinterest page and on decadirect.org.

Planning for the Years Ahead
For all of you who are seniors, make sure to have a plan in place and deadlines set as you begin the tackle the daunting process of college applications. Write those essays early, and line up a strong list of recommendations from people who have seen you grow over the years. Applying for One of DECA’s Scholarships
DECA’s corporate sponsors offer over $300,000 in scholarships annually to DECA members! Applying online could not be easier, so don’t miss out on your chance to get some scholarship money for college. Your hard work in high school the last four years will have really paid off!

Taking Part in the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW)
November 14-20, 2016, is recognized world-wide as Global Entrepreneurship Week. Last year, over 160 countries participated in GEW activities, including the DECA Idea Challenge. Click here to learn what this program entails and to see how you can become involved this fall.

Being Active on DECA’s Social Media Networks
In DECA, we have a hashtag for almost everything! Be sure to join in on all of DECA’s social media conversations by using #OwnYourFuture, and by following DECA Inc. on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Vimeo, Snapchat, and more!

Advocating for Career and Technical Education in Your Community
One of the best ways for you to share DECA’s mission is by going out and talking to members of your local business community. Get them involved in activities that your chapter is working on, and invite them to become a professional member and to judge at a local competition. Or, take a step further and meet with your representatives and encourage them to join DECA’s Congressional Advisory Board!
