Learn More about Careers in Residential Property Management at the International Career Development Conferences in April
The high school and Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conferences may still be a month away, but I am already looking forward to seeing many of you in Orlando, Fla., and sharing with you information about the many exciting career opportunities you can find in the residential property management industry.
I encourage you to stop by the National Apartment Association Education Institute booth to introduce yourselves and to learn about working in our industry. You also will have the opportunity to talk with recruiters from our industry who can share with you steps you can take now to prepare for a career in residential property management. They also can tell you about the different types of jobs that you probably weren’t even aware existed in our industry.
You may not realize that you don’t have to have a background in real estate or property management to work in our industry. For example, we regularly recruit people with the following backgrounds:
- Retail/Customer Service
I even will host a session for marketing students on April 19 at DECA’s collegiate conference where we will discuss "Putting your Marketing Skills to Work in the Residential Property Management Industry–It's a Slam Dunk!" At the high school conference, I will take part in roundtable discussions with 100 new high school faculty members to promote our industry and to give them information about careers in residential property management that they can take back and share with their students.
I’m also excited about helping judge some of the competitions taking place at the conferences. I always enjoy seeing students show off what they have learned and the enthusiasm they bring to the competitions.
We look for that same enthusiasm in the people we hire to work in our industry. You have to enjoy what you do and in working as a member of a team. Our industry is built around serving others because we provide people with places to call “home.”
We recently launched our new RPMCareers.org website that features a “Career Quiz” you can take to see how your interests, education and experience might make you a great fit for residential property management. I encourage you to visit the site when you have a chance. Click on the “student” link at the top of the homepage to see current job openings and internship opportunities and to connect with others similar to you who are still relatively new to the industry.
In meantime, you can find me at Booth 138 from April 18-20 at the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference and at Booth 427 from April 25-27 at the High School DECA International Career Development Conference. Please stop by and introduce yourselves. Who knows, you might even find yourself a career in our industry.
