5 Ideas for DECA’s Community Service Campaign

The unique aspect about all DECA members is that we all love to give back to our schools and communities.

This is why DECA has dedicated one of its five chapter campaigns to be all about giving back. Even better, your good deeds can help your chapter earn incredible recognition on the international level too!

Here are a few ideas that your DECA chapter can use in DECA’s Community Service Campaign, but don’t limit yourself to just these ideas! A good idea for higher participation from all of your chapter members is to ask them what they are interested and passionate about helping with.

1. Coat Drive

As the #SummerofDECA comes to an end, so does the warm weather, which can leave many of those in your community in desperate need of warm clothing. Post up flyers around your school asking students to bring in a lightly used coats and jackets to donate to those in need. You can even ask your principal to announce your coat drive to the community too!

2. Offer Tutoring For Younger Students

Reach out to local middle or elementary schools in your community and offer to tutor students who need help with homework after school. This is also a great way to expose DECA to younger students, so they’ll be excited to join once they get to high school!

3. Donate a Percentage of Fundraisers to MDA

Fundraising is a fundamental activity that all chapters are involved in. Designate an upcoming fundraiser and donate a percentage of your chapter’s profit to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, or an organization close to your chapter. You could also donate a percentage of your chapter’s school-based enterprise profits to MID on #MDAMonday, which is the first Monday of each month!

4. Volunteer to Cook a Meal at Local Homeless Shelter

Reach out to a local homeless shelter and schedule a day to go cook a warm meal. Then, reach out to your chapter members and have each member bring in a different item (spaghetti, pasta sauce, meatballs, bread, drinks, desserts). Remembers to also have a sign up sheet for volunteers the day of the event.

5. Write Letters to Those Serving Our Country

One of the most requested items from deployed soldiers is simply a letter. At your next meeting, have members write a letter to a soldier and then find a local organization to help send your letters. Find out how you can send these letters here.

I believe that the greatest gift of all is giving back. DECA will even reward and recognize your chapter for the community service outreach activities you might already be a part of!

Remember that the Community Service Campaign is one of the easiest campaigns to complete. Simply host at least one event, have 75% of your membership participate and have at least one form of publicity or promotion!
