Advocating for DECA on Capitol Hill
Even after DECA’s 2014 Emerging Leader Summit ended, attendees still wanted to make their time in D.C. count.
Many attendees of this year’s #DECAELS took advantage of the prime location and used extra travel days to stop by Capitol Hill and meet with their association’s congressional representatives and staff on behalf of DECA and all Career and Technical Students Organizations.
Advocating for CTSOs and Career and Technical Education is an important facet of being at true DECA leader and this year’s ELS attendees did not disappoint. Over 80 DECA chapter and association officers, national officers and advisors met with over 35 congressmen and congresswomen to speak on CTE and CTSOs.
The advocating didn’t stop there though. Many chapters took to social media to spread the word about their meetings as well
@ric_rdoflores: I just met with my congress representative. What have you done today?
@stuckerdeca: Wearing the DECA blazer proudly on Capitol Hill yesterday and today to advocate for CTSOs. Awesome culminating activity at #DECAELS.
It’s easy to see why these DECA leaders are so motivated to take D.C. by storm. After three days focused on enhancing their leadership skills, these association and chapter leaders are ready to use what they’ve learned!
Hopefully the experience will be beneficial for not only DECA ELS attendees, but for the representatives they meet with too. Sharing DECA’s message and the impact that all CTSOs have on students is crucial to maintain the financial support necessary for these organizations to thrive.
DECA would like to thank all the leaders who fit time into their schedule to meet with their representatives and know you will Make It Count this year for all CTSOs.
