Top 10 Best Things About the 2013 DECA ICDC
Although the 2013 International Career Development Conference has passed, my memories of the experience will never fade. From touching ground in sunny Anaheim to walking across the oh-so-coveted stage, there is not a single moment I won’t treasure. Here are the 10 best aspects of my ICDC experience I will always remember.
No matter the reason for travelling to Anaheim, one must always find time to visit Disneyland. I’m sure I saw at LEAST half of the entire delegation there when I visited. Plus the 80+ degree weather and palm trees didn’t hurt either.
Traveling means eating every meal at some kind of restaurant for fast-food chai, which posed some problems for healthy eaters. In my opinion, the best way to handle this was to simply give in! I enjoyed every last bite of whatever my stomach desired while in Anaheim. Now that I’m back home, it’s time to reacquaint myself with a non-DECA diet.
8. Hotel Beds
Sleeping at home in a twin bed is cozy and comfortable, but when placed alongside a queen, there is no comparison. Although we deprived ourselves of sleep because we wanted to practice our case study one more time, at least we had a warm, ginormous bed to fall into when our eyes refused to hold open.
Regardless of whether you met people inside your chartered association or those from another continent altogether, they all have one thing in common: DECA. These are 16,000 of the world’s best and brightest, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet as many people as I could!
Seeing someone’s face as their name is called while on stage is one of the best things I have ever experienced. Screaming and cheering with everyone in my chartered association created a sense of pride and unity that goes way beyond competition.
For many of you, this moment was after your role-play, but for me it was after the votes were in. At this point, there is nothing more I could do than just enjoy my time in Anaheim! Having the chance to be stress-free and experience everything the host city had to offer was a great reward after a lot of hard work.
If you’re like me, than you’ve been wearing the usual “final exam” uniform lately: sweatpants and t-shirts. I enjoyed having the opportunity to actually dress up and look presentable for a chance! It might be a while before I have the chance to show off my DECA blazer again, so being able to represent my organization the best way I could was a great treat.
3. Free Swag
No DECA member can resister free stuff! This year the exhibit booths were stocked with bags, pins, sunglasses, and even Otis Spunkmeyer cookies! I not only enjoyed interacting with some of our amazing corporate and business partners, but seeing my pile of swag at the end of ICDC was a great ending to the conference.
The energy that fills the convention center during ICDC is indescribable. I loved seeing the competitive nature of our DECA members this year! Knowing how hard everyone had worked the last few months and then seeing their excitement when it paid off is the reason why DECA means to much to me.
1. Hearing My Name Announced
Being announced as the 2013-2014 North Atlantic Region Vice President was a moment I will not soon forget. To say I was beyond thrilled would be an understatement! I was ecstatic to see all the hard work from my team and myself had finally paid off and I cannot wait to start my journey as your Vice President.
ICDC means many different things to everyone. If this was your last ICDC, make sure you take a moment to remember your favorite memories. If you haven’t had the chance to attend ICDC yet, use this list as inspiration and Make It Count this next year so you’ll be the one creating your own Top 10 ICDC 2014 list!
