Tips from 2013 ICDC Competitors

Friday, April 26,2013 marked the official start of the 2013 DECA International Career Development Conference competition.

The Anaheim Convention Center quickly turned into a sea of DECA blue blazers as teams and individuals filled the halls rushing to their events or carefully practicing one final time. The energy could be felt miles away as thousands of members presented their yearlong efforts to anxious judges.

Several competitors took a moment to share their best competitive event tips. Here’s what they had to say:

  • “Make sure your project is interactive and engaging for your audience, and that you maintain eye contact,” said Courtney Good, Claire Theodorescu and Apurva Subramanian from Cherry Creek DECA in Greenwood Village, Colo.
  • “Have general knowledge on your topic, always smile, and shake hands when introducing yourself,” said Simran Thakkar, Sohinee Adhikary and Kush Somaiya from John Foster Dulles DECA in Sugarland, Texas.
  • “Make sure you breathe, be confident, and bulldoze your judge with energy!” said Madison Daum from Blue Valley Northwest DECA in Overland Park, Kan.
  • “Be relaxed, comfortable, and confident! Also make sure you don’t get frustrated with your teammates,” said Shayna Langlitz, Ariana Shams and Victoria Archuleta from Eldorado DECA in Albuquerque, N.M.

Whether you plan on competing alone or with teammates, “Make It Count” at next year’s ICDC by following the advice of these ICDC-experts.
