THRIVE Academy Exceeds Expectations

A day filled with meeting new friends and dancing is not something you necessarily associate with the professional world. However, that was the scene at the brand new THRIVE Academy during the 2013 DECA International Career Development Conference.

Participants of the academy got a chance to network with international members and hear from speakers on leadership topics such as technology, teamwork, problem solving and goal setting.

A highlight of the academy this year was the THRIVE Academy Challenge: Digital Storytelling presented by FIDM. The amazing FIDM speakers gave audience members a behind-the-scenes look at the production and post-production process for one of their fashion show promo videos. Attendees learned the importance of making sure their digital presentations have a clear voice in order to stand out in today's media-crazy society. Attendees also were instructed to consider various factors such as lighting, mood and emotion when planning their digital projects as well as in the post-production process to ensure their final product captures their vision perfectly.

“We love the energy and enthusiasm of the THRIVE Academy," said Laura Gyamfi and Ariel Kesick from Domionion DECA in Sterling, Va. "The sessions are engaging while still providing good leadership tips and skills that we can apply in the future.”

Other members not only appreciated the exceptional content of this year's THRIVE Academy, but the diverse group of members in attendance. Rebekah Bourque, Elle Priester, Drew Lipscher, and Eric Gvozdenovich from Jupiter DECA in Jupiter, Fla. said, “The best part of the Thrive Academy is being able to easily meet international members in one room."

This year's THRIVE Academy includes a special Digital Storytelling Challenge in which members must express how DECA has helped them THRIVE either through a blog post, photos or video. The winning team with the best project will be recognized on stage at the Grand Awards Session and their blog, photos or videos will be featured on DECA's various social media sites.
