Final Exam Survival Guide

Apr 1, 2024

As we gear up for the grand finale of finals week, I thought I'd drop some wisdom to make this journey more exciting. As your trusty Collegiate DECA Executive Officer, I've curated a survival guide that's more thrilling than a blockbuster movie. Here are things to consider:

1. Nurture Yourself

Making time for self-care is crucial, even amid life's busy schedules. Make getting a good night's sleep a priority. Eat healthily. Exercise frequently. Find things that truly make you happy. Think about engaging in mindfulness exercises like yoga or meditation, for example. By providing guided meditation and relaxation techniques, the Calm app facilitates the integration of mindfulness practices into daily routines. Remember that caring for yourself is an investment in your general well-being, not a luxury.

2. Set Attainable Goals

Goals are the guiding stars that lead us toward our aspirations. Break down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks to make the journey less daunting. Celebrate the completion of each step, relishing the sense of achievement it brings. For example, use task management tools like “Todoist” or “Trello” to organize your goals into actionable steps, helping you stay focused and motivated.

3. Be Resilient

Life is unpredictable. Your journey is going to be filled with both triumphs and trials. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change and face challenges with determination. Every stumble is an opportunity to learn and grow, transforming adversity for personal development. Cultivate resilience by embracing a positive mindset, acknowledging the strength within you and recognizing that setbacks are not permanent roadblocks but rather temporary detours on your life's journey. Consider journaling about your experiences and lessons learned from challenges to deepen your self-reflection. A book that I recently read and loved on this topic is “Resilience: Hard-Won Wisdom for Living a Better Life" by Eric Greitens.

4. Manage Your Time

Time is a precious resource, and effective time management is the key to unlocking your full potential. Prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines, creating a schedule that balances work, personal commitments and moments of relaxation. The ability to organize your time not only boosts productivity but also ensures that you allocate moments for self-reflection and rejuvenation. Striking this balance allows you to navigate life's demands more easily and purposefully. Consider using the Pomodoro Technique for focused work intervals.

Remember that finals week is a brief moment in the vast journey of your college experience. Welcome the challenges, revel in your successes and rest assured that the entire Collegiate DECA team enthusiastically supports you through every stride.
