As humans, we get caught up in many things, whether it has to deal with school, work, sports, body image and more. These things take a toll on how we approach life and makes us more negative people.

As emerging leaders, we should not be focusing on bringing ourselves down, but instead focus on growing because as Dr. Dawn Barton Cadwallader addressed at the 2017 Ultimate DECA Power Trip, the more we better ourselves, the better leaders we become.

With this in mind here are Dr. Dawn’s 10 steps to creating the life you’ve always dreamed of:

1: CREATE A COMPELLING VISION

By doing something small such as saying, “I am a,” instead of saying “I want to become a,” will help you to create a vision for your future. This small change will make you believe that you already are what you want to become and make you work even harder to turn this vision into reality. According to Dr. Dawn, the human mind can not differ vivid dreams to reality. As you make your dreams more vivid, the more it will become a reality.

2: POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

One of the most simplest ways to turn your life around is to start thinking more positively. You can achieve this by doing things such as standing in front of the mirror and saying positive things to yourself. According to Dr. Dawn this is called the law of attraction, which means if you start bringing in positive thoughts, positive things will come back around.

3: NO STINKING THINKING

If your head is full of negative thoughts, your life will never be positive. Everytime you get negative thoughts you should use Dr. Dawn’s “Cancel Cancel” tactic. Whenever you get negative thoughts just pretend you have a big eraser and erase those negative thoughts while saying cancel cancel, this will get rid of all of your negative thoughts.

4: LIVE IN THE MOMENT

One of the reasons why our generation is so burnt out is because everyone is constantly plugged in and hooked on their phones. As Dr. Dawn stated, “Time is a precious commodity.” So we should stop focusing our lives around social media and being constantly plugged in. The more we disconnect and live in the moment, the better our lives will be.

5: MAKE YOUR LIFE A POSITIVE MOVIE

This is similar to the first two steps; we must always make our lives positive in order to attract positive events.

6: ELIMINATE TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS

Toxic relationships are one of the biggest stressors in life. Humans need interaction, but there should be a line that people can not cross. If certain people keeps on crossing that line and keep on bringing you down, it’s best to cut them off. Choose people who will lift you up, it will make your life so much better.

7: FACE YOUR FEARS

One of the most memorable quotes from this workshop was, “Procrastination is the killer of dreams!” The real reason why people procrastinate is because of fear, fear of not knowing the outcome. However, if we do things that scares us, we will be able to get more good than bad out of it, from the lessons we learn and the experiences that we gain.

8: GIVE GRATITUDE

This step is similar to Step 2. In life, things happens for a reason, even negative events have a reason. If something positive or negative happens in our lives, we should still look at it in a positive way and give gratitude to the universe. If we bring positive thoughts and actions positive things will come back around.

9: FORGIVE

Forgiveness is very important, when something does not go your way, you should forgive yourself instead of blaming yourself which makes you think negatively. However, when someone else has wronged you, you should forgive them because you take away their power of bringing you down.

10: REPEAT AND MAKE IT A HABIT

Once the session ended Dr. Dawn has challenged the attendees to at least try one of these steps and see how it can change their lives. If we choose to start and keep on going, it will help our lives in the long run.

As emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, many challenges will come our way, however, instead of hating them, cherish them. This is where we learn and can choose to turn our life around for the better and help us all become the leaders we want to be in the future.

A huge thank you to Dr. Dawn Barton Cadwallader from LIFE University for sharing these incredible tips with #DECAPowerTrip attendees, and DECA members everywhere!
