Here are the keys to a successful website:
Find a Platform that Works
Some tools are more difficult to work with or understand than others. For CDECA at ASU, WIX was the perfect fit, enabling us to post and update any information for not only our current DECA members, but interested and future members.
Building and updating a website can be a complex maze sometimes, but for a lot of people with technical skill (or motivation to learn) web design is easy peazy lemon squeezy. It takes time (because creating, uploading, and updating can take long periods), commitment to keep the website up to date, and passion to learn something new.
Before creating your website, study other successful websites. Look at apple.com, deca.org, or other top brands. The current trend is an electric, edge to edge, visual experience, either a video or product. When creating asudeca.com, we took inspiration from Apple, DECA, and asu.edu.
Building a website gets more complex as you build more pages while refining the look and layout. A good piece of advice is to draw out how your users will click through the website and form a layout from there (such as asking a friend to go on the website and note any improvements needed for the website). Don’t forget to go on the actual website yourself, walkthrough everything to see if the website seems to be just the way you and your team want it.
This is the most important part of this article! You want to get noticed on Google, right? What is the point of spending money on a website if your members can’t find it? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is critical and very complex. The platform you use will have tips and an SEO program that will help you, but it important that you also research SEO and understand how to be noticed. Here is a great article explaining the basics.
Our website was was a long time coming and still has a lot of work to do. There is no perfect website for under $1,000,000, so don’t freak out if it’s not perfect. Just make sure your members can use it, it looks DECAmazing, and can be seen by Google.
