5 Ways to Get the Most Out of a Summer Job
As a student, you might envision working a job over your summer break that keeps you busy and helps you make some extra money, but are you fully reaping the benefits of a summer position?
Are you being challenged and growing in your work?
Here are some tips on how to get the most out of a summer job:
1. Look for something in your field of interest.
A summer position is a great opportunity to get a taste of your future career. It’s like a college internship; by obtaining a position in a field you are interested in, you will develop a deeper understanding of that specific area.
Did you know that on-boarding a new employee, high school and college grad alike, can cost 10’s of thousands of dollars for employers? That’s why companies prefer you to have experience in their specific field.
2. Putting your DECA skills to use.
DECA gives students a real edge in areas such as public speaking, making sales, and problem solving. When you are hired for a summer position, you will be able to practice applying these learned skills in real world situations, making yourself a valuable contributor to any company you’ll work for.
3. Become a team player.
Working with your friends can be fun, but working with new people gives you a greater opportunity to grow. Learning to work with a team is a vital skill to develop at a young age because you will work with a wide range of people throughout your careers, and the more personalities you learn to work with, the better teammate you will be in the future.
4. Ask for feedback.
A little constructive criticism can take you a long way if you allow it. Be sure to meet with your manager throughout the summer for some feedback on your performance. What are your strengths? What can you improve upon? Nobody is perfect, so use the feedback to improve your skills and expand your knowledge.
5. Look for a paid internship.
This one is mainly directed to our Collegiate DECA members. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Summer work and college credit? Yes, please! Summer is a great time to gain internship credits, especially in your field of interest. However, if you are high school DECA member, keep your eyes open for non-credit internships.
