Growing As a Leader Thanks to DECA and Chipotle

From a wall flower to the boss: that’s the journey high school senior Emmanuel has been on for the past two years.

He credits this dramatic transformation to his involvement with Chipotle, where he’s now a Service Manager, and DECA, a national student organization committed to developing students into future leaders and entrepreneurs.

Keep reading to hear from Emmanuel on how he became a force to be reckoned with in both the kitchen and the classroom.

“To become a leader, you have to lead by example.” – EMMANUEL, SERVICE MANAGER AT CHIPOTLE

Emmanuel joined DECA as a quiet high school sophomore. Once a member, he was pushed outside his comfort zone and met new faces at the program’s events, including local chapter activities and national conferences.

“It gave me the confidence to say, ‘you know what, I know what I’m doing and I’m going to learn from my mistakes,’” revealed Emmanuel. “Even at Chipotle, I was most comfortable washing dishes in the back. DECA gave me the push to go up to my teammates working the grill and ask questions like ‘how do you do this?’ and ‘how do you do that?’.”

With his newfound confidence, Emmanuel quickly learned the ropes at Chipotle and was promoted to Service Manager in just one year. As a Service Manager, Emmanuel says he learned that “to become a leader, you have to lead by example.” This lesson has not only helped him continue to grow his career at Chipotle, but also helped him become president of his local DECA chapter during this past year.

So what’s next for Emmanuel? He’s continuing to grow his career by sharpening his business skills. As a Service Manager at Chipotle, Emmanuel is learning the ins and outs of running a multi-million-dollar business. Meanwhile, DECA is providing him with opportunities to learn business skills through workshops hosted by the program’s company partners.

Another goal for Emmanuel is to earn his college degree. He’s excited to take advantage of Chipotle’s educational assistance program next year, which he notes “is going to work well with my schedule work-wise and school-wise.” Armed with the confidence and resources he needs to succeed, the sky is the limit for Emmanuel’s career.
